IRS Problem Resolution
You should never meet the IRS alone.
Audit representation under Form 2848 Power of Attorney means the IRS communicates with us, not you. We know what to provide, what not to volunteer, and how to close the audit efficiently.
In short
IRS audit representation means a licensed professional (CPA, EA, or attorney) acts on your behalf throughout an audit — receiving notices, attending interviews, and negotiating the outcome. Under Form 2848 Power of Attorney, the IRS deals with us, not you. We represent every type of audit: correspondence (about 75% of all audits), office, and field.
The three audit types
- Correspondence audit — by mail, narrow scope (one or two specific items). Most common type (~75% of audits).
- Office audit — at an IRS office, broader scope. Usually involves a few schedules of your return.
- Field audit — IRS agent at your home or business. Highest-stakes, often a full review.
What we do during an audit
- Establish Power of Attorney (Form 2848) — the IRS stops contacting you directly
- Review the IRS's information request and your records before responding
- Identify defensible positions on every flagged item
- Negotiate scope (push back on overbroad requests)
- Attend any in-person meetings — you do not need to be there
- Negotiate the closing (adjustments, no change, or appeals if needed)
If the audit doesn't go your way
If the auditor proposes adjustments you disagree with, you have appeal rights. We file the appeal, present the case to the IRS Office of Appeals (a separate, more flexible body), and often achieve better outcomes than the original auditor proposed. Beyond Appeals, the next step is U.S. Tax Court — which is rarely needed.
